The Port of Los Angeles Explores Cleaner Terminal Solutions with Clean Energy Redeem™ Renewable Natural Gas

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – October 16, 2019 –Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Nasdaq: CLNE) is set to fuel 20 ultralow-NOx yard tractors with Redeem™ renewable liquified natural gas (RLNG) at the Port of Los Angeles for a demonstration by the California Energy Commission (CEC) that will examine clean fuel alternatives.

The largest port in the country, the Port of Los Angeles was awarded a $5.8 million state grant by the CEC to purchase and test a new fleet of zero and near-zero emission yard tractors—20 with Cummins Westport L9N natural gas engines and five powered by electric batteries—at the 205-acre Everport marine container terminal. By incorporating these vehicles into daily operations, the new yard equipment will be evaluated in a real world setting for their operational efficiency, viability, reductions of NOx and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and fuel savings.

“We’re up for the challenge to showcase the power and performance of RLNG-fueled yard tractors, especially given the chance to compare them with identical vehicles that run on battery electricity,” said Greg Roche, vice president, Clean Energy Fuels. “This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the ease with which we can establish a natural gas fueling infrastructure and get vehicles up and running with renewable natural gas to make an immediate positive environmental impact.”

“This program is an important opportunity to showcase clean fuels and technologies that cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce petroleum use,” said Thomas Jelenic, vice president of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. “It is another example of the industry evaluating innovative ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality.”

Redeem is derived from capturing biogenic methane that is naturally created by the decomposition of dairy, landfill, and wastewater treatment plant waste. As a vehicle fuel, Redeem enables at least 70 percent reduction in carbon emissions when displacing diesel or gasoline. RNG from sources such as dairy farms and green waste can reduce GHG emissions to below zero.

About Clean Energy
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is the leading provider of natural gas fuel and renewable natural gas (RNG) fuel for transportation in the United States and Canada, with a network of approximately 530 stations across North America that we own or operate. We build and operate compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas stations (LNG) stations and deliver more CNG, LNG and RNG vehicle fuel than any other company in the United States. Clean Energy sells Redeem™ RNG fuel and believes it is the cleanest transportation fuel commercially available, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70%. Clean Energy owns natural gas liquification facilities in California and Texas which produces LNG for the transportation and other markets. For more information, visit www.CleanEnergyFuels.com.
