Transit’s next stop: RNG.

Transit agencies nationwide are making the switch to renewable natural gas (RNG) because of the significant environmental and economic benefits over diesel and other alternatives. But RNG is nothing new – it’s a mature, dependable solution that’s been around for over a decade, trusted by some of the country’s largest fleets, like LA Metro, NYMTA, and DART. In early 2025, transit agencies can apply for federal grant funding to cover 85-90% of the cost of new RNG buses and infrastructure.

Sustainable

RNG reduces carbon emissions by up to 300% versus diesel, making it the only alternative fuel that can achieve a negative-carbon intensity rating.

Affordable

RNG is a domestic, stable-priced fuel, competitive with diesel. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) also provides grant funding to help fleets transition to RNG.

Clean

RNG engines are dramatically cleaner at the tailpipe than diesel engines, with nearly zero smog-forming NOx emissions.

Seamless

Fast-fill RNG dispensers ensure quick fueling so fleets always meet rollout and minimal operational changes are required, if any.

2025 FTA grant opportunities.

The FTA Low-No Emission and Bus Facilities grants are designed to support the transition of the country’s transit fleet to clean, energy-efficient solutions like RNG. Since 2022, the FTA has awarded over $500M to fund natural gas projects, offsetting capital expenditures almost completely. The 2025 program is expected to open early in the year, with applications due within 2-3 months. The program supports agencies who are looking to switch to RNG, or expand their current RNG fleet and facilities. Eligible projects include:

New RNG bus
purchases
RNG station
construction
Facilities
upgrades
Workforce
development

We’ll help you apply.

Don’t miss out on FTA grant funding because you don’t have the resources to complete the application. Clean Energy will act as your partner on the application, implementing the project efficiently and at no cost.

To date, Clean Energy’s grant department has secured over $65M in Low-No funding for our transit customers. Our team is qualified and dependable with over 20 years of experience.
